Let’s glow!

As this blog is all about essential oils and wellness… I wanted to share a wellness product with you all!   My mom introduced me to a new product called L’dara.    L’dara anti-aging serum is a revolutionary breakthrough in skincare. It is the first product to utilize the age defying compound derived from the goji berry!

After more than 6 years and $5.5 million dollars of research, L’dara advanced anti-aging serum is the first product to utilize LBP-5 Complex… it is L’dara’s patent- pending age defying compound derived from the Goji berry.  It has been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by 35% in just 28 days!

Another cool thing is that one of the ingredients in this is Lavender!  No wonder I like it so much. 🙂    My mom told me to take a before picture, so I could see the difference.  I took one and deleted it because I didn’t like it-  that was a big mistake!  This company will choose 3 people every month to win a cash prize for the biggest difference in how the serum has changed their face.  My mom won 2nd prize for her transformation!

Here are a couple winners from the month of February..

I see a huge difference in my skin… my wrinkles are better and it makes my skin glow!  I had a lot of sun damage on my chest and those lines are disappearing.  I have to say that I have fallen in love with this product.

Here is a picture of one of our winners… it shows a huge difference in how her chest looks now.

Not only does it help wrinkles– it has been clinically proven to help the tone, elasticity, visible effects of sun damage, discoloration, fine lines hydration and texture.  It also helps with acne and Rosacea.

L’dara is Paraben free, Phthalate-free, fragrance free, free of synthetic colors and is gluten free.

Here is one more picture to show how this helped with acne..

L’dara serum has been named the best anti-aging serum on the market right now… in fact, the Dancing with the Stars makeup team uses this and loves it!

dancing with the stars

One thing I love about this company is that if you get 3 friends to use this product as well… you will get yours free every month!   It is $120 retail, but if you become a preferred customer and use it every month– it will be $90 a month with free shipping.  Or it could be free if you got 3 friends to use as well… I’m doing that now and getting it for free!

I can’t rave enough about this product!  I used to spend a fortune on eye creams, wrinkle creams, serums, etc…  I got rid of all of those.  The company’s motto is about creating happiness… this is so true.  This really makes me happy and my face thanks me everyday for using it!  So, if you have skin and you want to look younger, more radiant and want to get rid of wrinkles– you need to try L’dara!  Let’s glow!

Peace and Calming

The name for this essential oil is perfect…  not only does this really help you to calm down, but when diffused it creates a peaceful atmosphere.   If you have some kids that are acting a little crazy (um…which is usually in my house on a daily basis) ….try diffusing some Peace and Calming oil and watch them settle down!

peace

Peace and Calming is a blend of  five essential oils that include:

Ylang Ylang–  increases relaxation and can balance male and female energies

Patchouli–  it provides general support for health and helps release negative emotions

Tangerine– contains esters and aldehydes that are sedating and calming, helping with anxiety and nervousness.

Orange-  elevating for the mind and can bring feelings of joy and peace

Blue Tansy– is an anti-inflammatory and helps combat negative emotions like anger

**Since this contains Tangerine and Orange EO-  you want to avoid putting this on exposed skin and going into direct sunlight for at least 12 hours.  **

The amazing thing about essential oils is that they not only address physical symptoms, but emotional as well…

When we inhale the fragrance of an essential oil, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they’re registered by the nerves of the olfactory membranes in the nose lining. The odor molecules stimulate this lining of nerve cells and trigger electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the amygdala – where emotional memories are stored – and to other parts of the limbic system of the brain.

Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects… Olfactory responses to odors induce the brain to stimulate the release of hormones and neurochemicals that in turn alter the body’s physiology and behavior.”

Essential Oil Desk Reference, 4th Edition

Peace and Calming is highly recommended for those who have ADD, ADHD and sensory disorders.  Apply to their feet  2x daily.

There are so many amazing ways to use this blend…. and not only does this work well on children and adults– but horses love this stuff!  And if you have pets that freak out during thunderstorms… you can rub this on the pads of their feet to help them relax.  If you have an overactive dog you can rub this behind their ears.

Here are 5 great ways to incorporate this delicious smelling essential oil into your daily life:

1.  Improving sleep

You can rub a couple drops on the bottoms of your feet or shoulders to help you sleep at night…  I rub this on the bottom of my kid’s feet at night and they are out like a light!  This also helps kids who wake up a lot in the night.

My secret bedtime weapon so my kids look like this puppy… Peace and Calming and Lavender oil applied to their feet.

pup

2.  Restless leg syndrome/leg cramps

You can rub this into your legs and calves for restless leg syndrome.

3.  Teeth grinding

You can rub this on the bottom of the feet or diffuse to help with teeth grinding.

4.  Anxiety

If you are having anxiety.. place a drop at the base of your skull.  You can also rub on your wrists and inhale.  Good for nervous tension and social anxiety as well.

5.  Calming the atmosphere

Diffuse to help overactive children.

In addition to Lavender, this oil is one of our favorites to help reduce stress…. we all need more peace and calming in our lives and this would be a great addition to help you and your family!

Di-Gize

I felt like this blend of essential oil had to have some special attention.  It really has saved me on so many occasions.   To be honest, I really do not like the smell of this… but because this stuff works so well– I don’t care how it smells!  🙂

My first experience with this oil was a few years ago… me and my family went out to eat one night. I started feeling sick before I had even left the restaurant. We came home and my hubby started having issues too… oh dear. Well, I shall spare you all the fun details of what went on.  I remembered my Di-Gize oil and knew I needed to test it out. I put a few drops in a carrier oil and rubbed on our stomachs.’ I then added a couple drops to a clear vegetable capsule and we both took one of those as well. I think it was about 20 minutes and we both started feeling better immediately. Amazing!

This blend of oil helps with a whole array of issues… heartburn, acid reflux, food poisoning, flu, constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). What a great alternative this is—as there can be so many side effects with prescription medication. Essential oils do not have harmful side effects!

Di-Gize is a blend of eight essential oils that include:

Peppermint-  (of course- good ole’ Peppermint) soothes digestion and blocks pain

Tarragon-  helps support digestive system

Ginger–  helps digestive issues and motion sickness

Lemongrass-  anti-inflammatory

Fennel-  helps stimulate circulatory function and has analgesic properties

Juniper – helps with cleansing and detoxifying

Anise –  helps calm digestive congestion

Patchouli-  this is calming and also helps with digestive issues

digize

**Safety precautions–  Since this contains Fennel… it is recommended that this should be avoided in pregnancy and avoid if you have epilepsy.  Also, Juniper should be avoided in pregnancy.   To be safe– children under 5 yrs. of age should not use this.  Make sure to dilute this oil.**

If you tend to have stomach issues on a regular basis, I would look into other contributing factors– possible gluten or dairy sensitivity (or both!)  I realized after many years of being in pain that I was allergic to wheat and dairy.  I feel so good since I have eliminated these things from my diet.   I would eliminate one at a time and see how you feel– not both at the same time.  Once in a while, I cheat and I end up paying for it… and I end up reaching for my Di-Gize– which always helps!

As I love the movie French Kiss, my hubby enjoys yelling this at me…..

“Spasm! Spasm!……. LACTOSE INTOLERANT!”

meg ryan

P.S.  Di-Gize would be a good thing to carry with you on a train– it is good for motion sickness too!

This is such a lifesaver for me when my boys are not feeling good. If they happen to get the stomach flu, I will dilute this and rub on their tummies and feet every hour or so.  It really makes a difference for them and they do tend to get over the virus more quickly.  Most of the time I will just use Peppermint on them if they have an upset tummy– but I do bring out the heavy duty Di-Gize when they need more help.

I highly recommend  this oil… it will greatly improve the stressful situations that can accompany digestive distress!

“Happy- Smile.  Sad- Frown.   Use the corresponding face for the corresponding emotion!”  Using Di-Gize will turn that frown upside down! 🙂

Ode to Jean Nate’

Anybody remember this fragrance?  This was my go to scent in the 80’s!    I loved smelling good even in my elementary years.  I would splash this stuff all over me and then I was ready for the day!  I’m sure my family and kids at school appreciated the fact that I smelled like I had swam in this stuff.  🙂

I sure loved my Jean Nate’!

jean nate

I still love smelling good, but I have become pretty sensitive to chemicals.  I used to walk in a department store and try all the free samples of perfume… now I instantly get a headache.  There is a way to smell good and not get bombarded with chemicals— that is making your own perfume with essential oils!  And you get the added bonus of all the health benefits of the essential oils at the same time.

First you want to narrow down what essential oils you like the most and figure out your signature scent.

You want to normally have a top note, a middle note and base note in your blend.

Top Note– They are the fastest acting… the first scent you notice.  They are the quickest to evaporate.  They are the most stimulating and have an uplifting effect on the mind and body.  Some examples would be:  Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit and Lime.

Middle Note–  They do not evaporate as quickly and are the more balancing of the essential oils.  Here are a few middle note oils:  Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary (avoid with high blood pressure) and Rosewood

Base Note–  Slowest to evaporate.  They are the most sedating and relaxing.   Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Sandalwood and Rose are all base note oils.

Note:  This is the information that I have learned in my aromatherapy class.. some other sites may choose to include certain essential oils in the top notes instead of middle.  And that is okay…  it is more important how it smells to you as the blending occurs.

You don’t want it to be top heavy or base heavy.  A good rule to follow is to blend all the drops evenly.  Or distribute the drops for the top to have 30% the middle to have 50% and the base to have 20%.   The best way is to simply start adding the drops (base notes first) and test by smelling to see if you like the way it is turning out.

It really is a lot of fun and a great idea for gifts for people, if you know the scents they like.  Once you make it– let it sit in a cool dark place for about two weeks.  Then you are ready to splash yourself with your own unique perfume.  Well… not splash, but dab.  🙂

There are a couple different ways to make your own.  My favorite is using the essential oils in Jojoba oil.   You can also make your own perfume in an alcohol base.  You want to use distilled water with it– the ratio would be 5-30% alcohol.

First you need a dark glass bottle.  I filled my bottle with 10ml of Jojoba oil and then added my essential oils. You want to do about 15-20 drops.

Here is my recipe for my favorite scent:   1 brown glass bottle or cobalt blue (just make sure it is dark),  1 glass dropper,  10 ml of Jojoba Oil,   6 drops of Bergamot,  7 drops of Lavender,  4 drops of Vanilla and 3 drops of  Sandalwood. (15-20 drops total of the oils)  I actually didn’t follow the exact blending “rules” on this, but it was close enough.  I will probably double my recipe next time.  This is smelling so yummy!

brown bottle

Bergamot has a fresh sweet citrus scent… I find it has a little kick to it.  It is a great tool for battling depression and anxiety.  Not only are you smelling good… this is helping you emotionally as well.

Lavender has a light floral aroma.  It is a calming essential oil that can help combat stress.

Vanilla has a sweet rich aroma.  (Love Vanilla)  It has comforting properties.  (Vanilla is a base not, but I tend to use more because I love it so much.  And it doesn’t seem as heavy as the other base note oils.)

Sandalwood is sweet, spicy and woody.  It can be expensive, but you don’t need to use much to get your desired effect.  Sandalwood is thought to be an aphrodisiac!  It also is great for the respiratory system and soothing emotions.

Here are some other ideas:

Orange, Lavender, Vanilla and Jasmine

Bergamot, Rosewood, Vanilla and Ylang Ylang

Grapefruit,  Lavender and Neroli

I could go on and on….  The possibilities are endless in creating your own perfume…  experiment and have fun!

Here are some other bottles I have ordered… these are so cute.  Great to put your perfume in or to give as a gift!

blue

Remember to take frequent breaks while blending… smelling too much Ylang Ylang or Jasmine can cause headaches.  Step outside and get some fresh air or breathe some coffee grounds to clear the scent.  Also, when making perfume for yourself– always check the contraindications of each oil.    Skin/patch test first as well.

Happy blending, friends!

Irene Mae

Today, I am dedicating this to my sweet grandma, Irene Mae Nugent.  Today is the day that she died one year ago… one day before her 98th birthday.  I was very close to her.  I spent many summers with her…. so many good memories. Those memories are treasures to me now… riding horses, eating Wheaties with sugar heaped on them, helping grandma in her yard, grandma teaching me how to drive her blue pickup truck, watching basketball games in the summer evenings and her love of animals and geography.  She was a very independent and spunky little lady!  It is so bizarre to think that she is not here anymore… but I know that she is young again (with red hair) and she is riding horses and having a blast with my grandpa, Hap, and my aunt Laura.  She is also with the Lord!  She is full of joy and peace and no more anxiety.

About six months before she died, she was having trouble sleeping.  I brought some Lavender to her and asked if I could put this on her feet.  I also told her to put it on before bed.  The Lavender essential oil started helping her sleep and when she ran out she said, “Angela, I just need that Lavender.”  Well, we made sure that grandma had more Lavender!   Grandma was able to live independently (with the help of my mom) up until the last week of her life (and she was still sharp as a tack!)

In the hospital, she was surrounded by everyone that loved her… she could not respond anymore but she could hear us.  I brought my Lavender and Frankincense and put some on her feet… you could see her body immediately relax.  It happened so quickly, which I am so glad that she did not have to suffer a long time.  My mom, my sister and cousins — we all got to surround grandma and love on her.  That was so special.

A few days after she died, I was reading about Spikenard.  Spikenard is a form of Lavender and this is also the oil that Mary used to put on Jesus.

John 12:3
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard (Spikenard or also known as Lavender) an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

I used Frankincense because it is a spiritual oil and it helps with stress and despair. Frankincense is a white resin or gum. It is obtained from a tree by making incisions in the bark and allowing the gum to flow out. It is highly fragrant when burned and was therefore used in worship, where it was burned as a pleasant offering to God.  (Exodus 30:34) Frankincense is a symbol of holiness and righteousness. The gift of frankincense to the Christ child was symbolic of His willingness to become a sacrifice, wholly giving Himself up, analogous to a burnt offering.

I thought this was so cool… I was able to put these oils on grandma right before she went into heaven… the same oil (Lavender) that was used to put on Jesus to prepare him for his burial.  And Frankincense… a pleasant offering.

At the time, I had no idea what these essential oils symbolized, but He knew.  I love that she went to be with the Lord smelling like Lavender and Frankincense!

I am so grateful that we had this little lady in our lives.  And I want to give you hope today… Jesus is real.  He is the kindest person I have ever known.  He loves you today.  I know grandma is looking down today and smiling.

Here is a poem that she had clipped into one of her journals:

“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish enough “Hello’s” to get you through the final “Good-bye..”

Getting started

Hey everyone!

I have a lot of people ask me how to order these essential oils and how it all works.  In the past, I have just sent people to my website or told them they could order these off of Amazon as well.   Well, I have been reading about people getting ripped off on Amazon… that is so wrong!  Some of these distributors are emptying out the contents and putting some essential oil back in– diluted with a lot of carrier oil.  So, I am not going to suggest that anymore.  I am going to explain (in the easiest way possible) how to order these oils.. if not from me– please find another Young Living distributor.  I absolutely love these essential oils… they are such a gift from God!

What I like about Young Living is that if you decide to become a member there is no pressure to sell or distribute these oils, there is no required autoship and no monthly fee of any kind. (you only have to spend $50 a year to keep your membership going)  Here are your options:  you can buy these oils whenever you would like at the retail price.  If you decide you would like to start getting a discount on your oils (24% OFF each oil) you can sign up to be a member to do that.  There are three ways to sign up to be a member and you can do any of them depending on which one works the best for you.  The basic starter kit is $40.  I would recommend the premium starter kit below.

I am going to show you below a picture of what you can get in the Premium Starter Kit– I think this is the best deal.  You get so much in this kit… including a home diffuser (the diffuser is normally $98 on its own)  This kid includes :

PanAway

I have been hibernating like a bear for the last few months, due to the cold weather and dark skies. Finally, I think there is light at the end of the winter tunnel.. the air smelled like spring last night!  It rained and it smelled delicious… so, I  think that is going to help me come out of hibernation.  Since I am coming out of my cave, I will start to be more active…. walking, running, using weights… etc.   I will definitely be doing more outside and because I am almost 41 yrs. old….I will likely need to turn to my trusty PanAway Essential Oil.   This oil is great for sports injuries,  sprains, muscle and bone pain, bruises, headaches and even broken bones!  “PanAway is an excellent blend of essential oils that was specifically designed for inflammation and pain. It brings additional oxygen into the site of the injured or damaged tissue which accelerates the healing process as well.”

pan

PanAway is a blend of Peppermint, Wintergreen, Helicrysum and Clove.  I love the smell of this oil… it smells like a Wintergreen Lifesaver!

Peppermint- (Mentha piperita), which is calming for nerves

Wintergreen- (Gaultheria procumbens), which has an active constituent similar to cortisone

Helicrysum- (Helichrysum italicum), which is soothing for localized discomfort

Clove-  (Syzygium aromaticum), which contains eugenol, used by dentists to numb gums

panaway1

I don’t use this oil everyday, but this is the first oil I reach for if I pull a muscle or hurt myself in any way… it is amazing how quickly it does work.  I just apply a couple drops directly on the skin.  I would do this 2-3 times a day.  This can be a hot oil because of the Peppermint and Wintergreen…so you probably want to dilute it with a carrier oil.

Here are some other uses for PanAway:

Dilute 1 part PanAway essential oil to 1 part vegetable oil. Possible skin sensitivity for some users.

• Rub on temples, back of neck, forehead or use as a compress on back.

• Applied on location for sore muscles, cramps, bruises, or wherever it may hurt after exercise.

• Apply PanAway oil topically on an injured area to reduce inflammation and bruising

• Apply PanAway oil topically to sore muscles after exercising

• Rub a drop of PanAway oil on the temples, forehead and back of the neck to relieve a headache

• Mix PanAway oil with massage oil and massage on location to stop growing pains

• Rub 1-2 drops of PanAway essential oil on arthritic hands to lessen pain

• Rub 2-3 drops of PanAway oil at the base of the spine to relieve sciatic pain

• For arthritic pets, massage PanAway oil diluted with V-6 Vegetable on location

This is especially great for kiddos having growing pains… dilute with a carrier oil and massage into the legs.  Plus, your kids will love smelling like a Lifesaver!

Happy (soon to be) spring, my friends!  Let’s get out there and get active!

Killing the Candida Beast

I am really psyched to be writing this article tonight… if this can help someone like it helped me– that makes me very happy!  I was in the dark for so long… I probably have been dealing with Candida on and off for the last 18 years.  Once you figure out that this is what you are dealing with… you can then start the process to kill this nasty stuff.

What in the world is Candida?

Candida is a fungus, which is a form of yeast, and a very small amount of it lives in your mouth and intestines. Its job is to aid with digestion and nutrient absorption but, when overproduced, candida breaks down the wall of the intestine and penetrates the bloodstream, releasing toxic byproducts into your body and causing leaky gut. This can lead to many different health problems, ranging from digestive issues to depression.

Here are 10 major symptoms of Candida:  (there are more… including the inability to lose weight!)

1. Skin and nail fungal infections (such as athlete’s foot or toenail fungus)
2. Feeling tired and worn down or suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
3. Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
4. Autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis
5.Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus, ADD, ADHD and brain fog.
6. Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression
7. Vaginal infections , urinary tract infections, rectal itching or vaginal itching
8. Severe seasonal allergies or itchy ears
9. Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings
10. Skin  issues such as eczema, psoriasis, hives, and rashes.

I had many of these symptoms for a long time and had no idea that Candida was the culprit. I did go to the doctor (she was great) but misdiagnosed what I had.  I had terrible fatigue, but I shall spare you the rest of my symptoms… let’s just say that they were not fun.  As I love to do research, I happened to read some good articles on Candida.  I had a light bulb moment!  Finally.

I took the test that this article posted.  Here is a great website about Candida..this test will help you if you are wondering if you have Candida.  Take the test here: http://www.thecandidadiet.com/testingforcandida.htm  In addition to taking this test, you can have your doctor give you a blood test…
There are 3 antibodies that should be tested to measure your immune system’s response to Candida – IgG, IgA, and IgM. High levels of these antibodies indicate that an overgrowth of Candida is present. This is the most reliable test for Candida that you can find.

What causes Candida?

Antibiotic use
stress (stress spikes up your blood sugar and Candida feeds on that)
alcohol consumption
sugar
gluten
contraceptive pills

Well, isn’t that special?  Great…

As I love to do research, I found out what I needed to do and got some information from a holistic practitioner. So, this process is going to take you about 3 months… I know that seems long, but once you get going– it is not bad.  I promise.  I would begin by eliminating gluten, processed sugar and alcohol from your diet.  Candida loves alcohol and feeds off sugar and gluten.  This seems hardcore, but it is so worth it.  Once I was off sugar, I don’t crave sugar anymore.  I really don’t even miss it.  Let your body adjust to this new way of eating before you start the other things.  You might detox a bit once you eliminate the gluten and sugar.  I would do a week of this first.  You don’t want to do too much at first because you don’t want to overload your liver with all the toxins.. toxins being released by the die off from the Candida. Now it is time to move in for the kill… you could take anti-fungal medication, but there are always side effects with medication and it is hard on your liver.  I was able to do this with all natural methods!

Here is what I did:

lemon oil

**Drink lemon oil in your water daily.  This will help your body be less acidic.  Candida thrives in an acidic environment.

**Take a good probiotic.  Probiotics help crowd out the yeast. You can find at your local health food store in the refrigerated section.  You should continue to take this even when you are done with this regime. (take this mid-day)

**Grapefruit Seed Extract– this stuff is
amazing.  (take 3 tablets every morning)

**Candizyme- this is a product that will help detox the yeast out of your system.  If you can’t find this at your local store– you can find on-line.  (take this at night before bed)

Start with this and let your body adjust.  You will probably have some symptoms of the Candida die off… but don’t give up!  They won’t last long.  I think my most severe symptoms from the toxins lasted about 3 days… I had a terrible cold, fever and fatigue.  I also felt like my head was in a vice grip.  It really depends on the severity of your Candida… some people may not experience such extreme die off symptoms.  If you are experiencing very severe symptoms.. just cut back on what you are taking for a while, so you can give your liver a break.  Make sure to get plenty of rest, drink lots of water and take some epsom salt baths. Once you have adjusted to this, you can add in some essential oils!

Here are three good anti-fungal Essential Oils:  You can put these oils into a clear capsule and take daily. Put a couple drops into a clear vegetable capsule.  Pick one of these below.

oregano

Oregano– a powerful anti-fungal… don’t take on an empty stomach. Oregano essential oil is packed with constituents that make it a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and immune simulating oil.  Because Oregano is a natural antibiotic– make sure to not overdo it on the Oregano.

ocotea

Ocotea Essential oil has shown great potential in lowering blood sugar, lowering cortisol, digestive support, and as a disinfectant, antifungal and antiparasitic. (this was my favorite to use)

mountain savory

Mountain Savory Essential Oil stimulates and revitalizes the nervous system. Traditionally, this oil was used as a digestive remedy specifically for diarrhea and colic. It’s antiviral, antibacterial and immune supporting properties make Mountain Savory oil effective against viral infections and urinary and gastro-intestinal infections. It is a natural remedy for vaginal yeast infection, Epstein Barr and herpes as well.

After the three months, you can continue a few of these things to ensure that the Candida does not come back.  I take garlic pills,(garlic is one of Candida’s biggest enemies)  Lemon Essential oil, Ocotea Essential oil, Coconut oil,(Coconut oil is a powerful anti-fungal)  no gluten and Probiotics daily.  I also try not to eat processed sugar and I really am careful with how much wine I drink.  I am thrilled to say that I did kill the Candida beast and I feel good!   No more nasty symptoms.

Good luck on this journey!  You can do it..  God Bless you!

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.  Please note that I am not a doctor or holistic practitioner.  I am just sharing my experience with Candida and what I did to help heal my body.

Leaves are falling.. winter is coming.

Uh oh… clocks have to be set back an hour this weekend.  Not a big fan of it getting darker earlier.  I love summer and especially love fall weather.  As more leaves fall to the ground, it reminds me that my archenemy is just around the corner… the winter season!   I think a big part of my disliking winter is not only the cold, but the lack of sunshine.  My brain on winter is a seasonal affective disorder disaster.  Fortunately, I am much better than I used to be.  This is due to getting more of the things I needed for my hypothalamus and body to function better. I wanted to share some of my survival techniques that have really helped me and my family in the winter.

A few years ago, I ordered a NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp.  This little light box is amazing… I sit in front of this for 15-30 minutes a day.  It really makes a difference.  I ordered mine off of Amazon.

Sitting in front of my light box… getting happy happy happy.   light

Here is what it looks like from the front. A light box mimics outdoor light. Researchers believe this type of light causes a chemical change in the brain that lifts your mood and eases other symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Taking Vitamin D3 has changed my life in the winter as well! You can get your levels tested.. I got mine tested and I needed 7,000 IU!   Once I started taking the right amount, I noticed a huge difference in my mood.  I was not as cold and I did not have to sit in front of my light box as much.  Most people in this country have very low Vitamin D3 levels.  I use this Thorne brand (shown below) and you can also order from Amazon.  Did I mention that I am a Amazon Prime junkie?  Free shipping is pretty awesome.  (make sure it is D3 not just D)  I buy a spray Vitamin D3 for my kids from Dr. Mercola’s website.  It tastes good.

Vitamin D3 not only improves mood, but may help you lose weight. In a paper published in the August issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Anthony Norman, an international expert on vitamin D, identifies vitamin D’s potential for contributions to good health in the adaptive and innate immune systems, the secretion and regulation of insulin by the pancreas, the heart and blood pressure regulation, muscle strength and brain activity.

Access to adequate amounts of vitamin D is also believed to be beneficial towards reducing the risk of cancer.

Norman also lists 36 organ tissues in the body whose cells respond biologically to vitamin D, including bone marrow, breast, colon, intestine, kidney, lung, prostate, retina, skin, stomach and uterine tissues.

Probiotics..  What are probiotics? Simply put, it is the good bacteria that resides in your gut and battles infection caused by viruses, yeast, fungi and parasites. And it, like bad bacteria, is killed off with antibiotics, often leaving you more vulnerable for the next bug that comes along.  Probiotics improve your immune response. One of the main functions of healthful bacteria is to stimulate your immune response. “By taking probiotics and maintaining good intestinal flora, a person can also help to maintain a healthy immune system.

I have found this brand works the best for me… I get them in the refrigerated section at Sprouts.  They have a great kid’s brand as well.

Eating whole food.. eliminating as much processed food and sugar as you can.  I am also gluten free and that has made a big difference in how I feel. Nice!  I can’t stress enough how important eating healthy food is.  It will strengthen your immune system.  Eating processed foods and sugar lowers your immune system and makes you susceptible to sickness.

I have to give a shout out to my sweet mom.  She was so ahead of her time.  In the late 70’s and 80’s, it really was not the cool thing to eat healthy.  My mom would find these little hole in the wall health food stores so she could buy what she needed. Instead of a beautiful Whole Foods Mecca awaiting us… there would be a small, quiet and weird smelling store. I’m assuming that smell was from the bulk food bins which were full of yeasts, spices and other dry powders. Most of the time there was some bearded guy behind the counter and sometimes he would say, “Hey kid… do you want a piece of Carob?”  Um.. no.  I do not want Carob.  I think having a Carob bunny in my Easter basket every year was plenty for me.  I will tell you…. we really never got sick.  My mom always had healthy meals and snacks.  She went to Co-ops for Farmers Cheese and large tubs of natural peanut butter.  We would drive out to farms and pick our whole chickens straight from the tub of water the farmers had them in.  She would freeze like 50 chickens and we would have chickens for the whole year.  In fact, I am 40 years old and I don’t have any cavities… I am going to give all the credit to my mom!  Back then I would have killed for a white Wonder Bread sandwich with bologna. (my friends would never trade me at lunch) And now… I am so grateful to her. Those healthy lunches not only kept our immune systems strong, but it also taught us great nutrition.

I still don’t like Carob chocolate.  Let’s just be honest… Carob needs to stop pretending to be chocolate!  🙂

I mentioned in my last blog about the 4 Essential oils that we use to help fight sickness.  Thieves, R.C. Peppermint and Lemon– all powerful in helping you and your family out this winter.  Here is the link to that article.  http://wp.me/p3XIvS-4V

Last but not least… Exercise!  Exercise reduces stress and boosts happy chemicals! Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of euphoria and happiness.  If you exercise regularly, there’s a good chance that you’re helping to boost your immune system. In fact, recent studies have suggested that if you complete moderate exercise just a few times every week, you can drastically reduce the number of colds that you get every year. Outside of just keeping you in shape and helping you to become healthier over time, exercise can boost your immune system and help your body fight off harmful diseases and even something as simple as the common cold.

My mom still eats very healthy and is in great shape.. hope I can be in such good shape in my 60’s!  I definitely am not perfect. I still struggle to get my kids to eat healthier and I do have my fair share of chip and dark chocolate bingeing.  I think the goal is to try and do something every day to improve your health and to work on boosting your immune system with Vitamin D3, probiotics, whole foods, essential oils and exercise!  All of these things have greatly improved my winter experience… hope they will help you as well!
